Originally formed in 1991 with:
David Hunt - Guitar / Vocals
Kelvin Hastie - Bass
Dean Chiplin - Guitar / Vocals
Jeff Cochrane - Drums
The band originally had a surf punk approach to their sound, the band featuring a couple of avid surf fans in their line-up.
They played the influential 1992 Operation Music Storm
band battle and reached the finals with their heady mix
of sonic guitars and youthful enthusiasm.
Around this time they started to develop their melodic
sensibility, penning some choice hooks to compliment
their sonic wall. The band recorded a demo of crowd favourite "Sinker" and received good airplay for it.
At the end of 1992 the band entered the studio with Rob
Mayes to record tracks toward the Avalanche and Good
Things projects. Four songs were completed and these
were all released, "Sinker" being rerecorded and appearing
on the Good Things album.
The band played the second slot at the Avalanche Release
party, and appeared on a national youth show 'In Focus'
in a band profile slot.
The band really hit full steam with their songwriting
during this phase, writing some excellent hook-laden
songs, and performing some well-attended sets, including
a jam-packed Dux de Lux set.
The band worked toward recording the new material but
stress caused the original line- up to split, leaving
Hunt and Cochrane to continue on with new members under
the Supertanker moniker, Chiplin went to form his own
guitar-driven act Chicane, and Hastie went on to pursue
work as a promoter, staging the hugely successful 'Freak
Scene' concerts.
The new line-up played various concerts to reasonable
success but the band never had the same spark that the
original line-up had.
No further recordings ever eventuated, procrastination
being a trait of band leader Hunt at the time.
Hunt eventually disbanded Supertanker and moved on to
play guitar for Pumpkinhead, and then The Stereo Bus.
Cochrane was last seen doing his overseas experience
thing in London, but not playing music.
